Inside Pathways of Purpose: How Person-Centered Engagement Changes Everything

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, it is natural for family members to wonder how the changes ahead will affect their quality of life. As memory, communication, and daily tasks become more challenging, families may worry that their loved one will lose interest in the activities and relationships that have always been important to them.

What families need to know is that a dementia diagnosis doesn't erase a person's individuality or their desire to feel valued and an important part of the family. It also doesn't mean a person loses their need for purpose and a meaningful day-to-day living experience. In fact, those things become especially important as dementia progresses.

Pathways of Purpose: Making Meaningful Engagement Part of Everyday Life

Finding meaningful ways to help an individual living with dementia maintain their sense of identity and find purpose in their lives can make a real difference in the quality of their day-to-day living experience.

This is at the heart of our Anthem Memory Care’s Pathways of Purpose philosophy, a person-centered memory care approach built around each resident's individual interests, abilities, experiences, and preferences. Pathways of Purpose is designed to make meaningful engagement part of everyday life, a distinctly different approach from many communities that offer a one-size-fits-all list of activities, often simply to fill their calendars.

At Anthem, each activity is designed to give residents genuine, worthwhile opportunities to connect with one another. Most importantly, this programming enables residents to remain involved in their lifelong hobbies and interests for as long as possible, continuing to do things that have always given them joy and brought them a sense of accomplishment.

Getting to Know the Person Behind the Diagnosis

No two people are the same. And no two people will experience dementia in exactly the same way. The Pathways of Purpose program begins with the commitment to get to know each resident as an individual.

Anthem Memory Care community team members understand that each person brings a lifetime of experiences, relationships, interests, traditions, and personal preferences that remain an important part of who they are. That is why they take the time to learn about residents' life stories, careers, hobbies, family relationships, cultural backgrounds, and other things that have shaped their lives. That is also why so many of our caregivers develop deep, authentic relationships with residents and with their families.

Pathways of Purpose supports four important goals:

  • Honoring individual identity. A person's diagnosis doesn't define them. When a new resident comes through one of our community’s doors, our first goal is to learn about their background and life experience. We will talk with family members and friends to develop a full, vibrant portrait of the resident. This helps staff recognize and celebrate the person they have always been. It also helps forge strong relationships between our residents and our caregivers.
  • Building meaningful connections. Opportunities for interaction help strengthen relationships among residents, families, and team members. Smaller-group experiences can also make it easier for residents to participate and connect with others. We advocate an organic way of fostering authentic connections that bring a sense of belonging and caring for each other.
  • Encouraging independence and choice. Rather than expecting residents to follow a rigid schedule, staff use gentle invitations to engage and encouragement to keep moving forward, allowing individuals to participate in ways that feel comfortable and natural to them.
  • Creating opportunities for continued growth. Dementia may change what a person can do, but it doesn't eliminate the desire to learn, explore, create, and experience new things. Our team is continually working to develop programs that are calibrated to stimulate the brain in ways that don’t frustrate the residents but challenge them according to their abilities and comfort zones.

Making Engagement Part of Everyday Life

Pathways of Purpose goes beyond traditional activities. We look for innovative ways to enhance each resident’s experience and weave them into the community's daily rhythm, recognizing that even simple, quiet moments can build strong connection and engagement.

Depending on residents' interests and abilities, these experiences may include:

  • Creative activities involving art, music, and other forms of self-expression.
  • Time outdoors, gardening, and opportunities to connect with nature.
  • Visits with animals and other forms of animal-assisted engagement.
  • Opportunities for lifelong learning and exploring familiar or new interests.
  • Small-group gatherings that encourage conversation and social connection.
  • Everyday activities that reflect residents' former routines, hobbies, and responsibilities.

The goal of Pathways of Purpose is quality, not quantity. Therefore, a successful day isn’t measured by how many activities a resident participates in. Its value lies in identifying those experiences that are the most meaningful and make the resident feel included as a valued member of the community.

Interactions With Young People Bring Joy and a Sense of Purpose

Central to the Pathways of Purpose programming is our Better Together philosophy, which provides a broad range of opportunities for residents and local young people to build relationships. Anthem communities regularly welcome student volunteers and local school groups for visits and shared activities.

These intergenerational programs provide powerful emotional and social benefits for residents. They give residents opportunities to feel a sense of purpose, often by sharing their wisdom and advice or helping young students with their reading.

These interactions foster strong connections with the young people, easing feelings of loneliness among residents whose families may not be able to visit regularly. Many students and residents have formed many strong relationships through this program, relationships which benefit the young people as well.

Why Purposeful Engagement Matters

For someone living with dementia, a familiar song, a favorite pastime, or a conversation sparked by an old photograph can create a moment of recognition and connection. These moments may seem small, but not to our caregivers, who strive to capture them, knowing they can be deeply meaningful to residents and the people who care about them.

Pathways of Purpose is a way of life at our Anthem communities and reflects a deep commitment by all our staff members to spend each day building a quality life experience for each resident. It underscores Anthem Memory Care's belief that every person deserves to be recognized, respected, and supported as an individual.

Observe Pathways of Purpose in Action

The difference Pathways of Purpose makes can be seen every day throughout our Anthem Memory Care communities in the connections residents make and the experiences they share. It can also be seen in the thoughtful ways our team members get to know and support each individual. It's a philosophy that extends beyond scheduled activities, shaping the way residents are welcomed, engaged, and cared for each day.

We invite you to visit any of our Anthem communities and spend time observing an activity or project. Talk with our team members and residents. We'll be happy to answer your questions, learn more about your loved one's interests, preferences, and life experiences, and help you understand how our Pathways of Purpose approach to memory care can support your loved one and your entire family.
