A fund for Anthem employees facing an unexpected hardship.

Anthem's mission has always included you. This fund is that promise with support behind it, and a grant from this fund is yours, with no repayment.

What the fund can help with.

The fund is open across every department and every community.

The fund is for
  • A death in the immediate family, including funeral travel and expenses
  • A house fire, flood or natural disaster
  • A medical emergency not covered by insurance
  • Losing your transport unexpectedly, such as a car stolen or in an accident
  • Being the victim of domestic violence, theft or another crime
  • A temporary housing crisis outside your control
  • Food, fuel and immediate essentials while you get back on your feet
What it can’t cover
  • Ongoing or predictable strain, such as credit card debt or habitual late bills
  • Eviction that follows from unpaid rent rather than a sudden event
  • Routine maintenance and normal wear and tear on a vehicle
  • Planned life events, such as travel, a vehicle upgrade, a wedding or a new baby
  • Legal fees or fines resulting from personal choices
  • Missed work from scheduling conflicts, or voluntary unpaid time off

How it works.

1

Send your request

Apply directly to SHORE. Anthem does not process, review or handle any of the paperwork, so no one you work with sees your request.

2

SHORE reviews it

A reviewer at SHORE checks it against the fund’s standards and may come back with a question.

3

A decision comes back

Typically within one to three business days. If you are facing a shutoff or an eviction date, say so and it can be moved faster.

4

The money is sent

If your request is approved, you will get an email to set up payment. You choose direct deposit or a check.

Who sees your request.

Your request goes to SHORE, not to Anthem.

SHORE reports back to Anthem on the fund as a whole: how many grants were made, what kinds of hardship came up, how much was given out. Never who.

  • SHORE sees
Your name, your situation, and any documents you send. Only the reviewers handling your request.
  • Anthem sees
Totals and categories. No names, no details, no list of applicants.

Prefer to give by check?

You can apply if you are an active employee who has been with Anthem at least 90 days and is in good standing.

You will need documentation from a third party, dated within the last 60 days: a medical bill, a repair estimate, a police report, an obituary or something comparable. Handwritten notes cannot be accepted.

You can also give.

The fund is paid for by Anthem, by outside donors, and by employees who choose to put a little in each pay period. Giving is entirely optional and has nothing to do with whether you can receive a grant.

The fund is for

You choose the amount, from a few dollars a paycheck upward, and you can change or stop it whenever you like.

FAQs

Developer note. Build these as an accordion.

  • Do I have to pay it back?
No. A grant is a gift. There is no repayment, no interest, and no deduction from your pay.
  • Will my manager find out?
No. Requests go to SHORE and are reviewed there. You are not required to tell anyone at Anthem that you applied.
  • Does applying affect my job?
No. It has no bearing on your standing, your hours, your review, or anything else at work.
  • How long does it take?
SHORE issues a decision typically within one to three business days. If you are facing a shutoff or an eviction date, say so when you apply and it can be moved faster.
  • How much can I get?
Grants are generally capped at $500 per qualifying event. If your situation needs more than that, apply anyway, requests above the cap are still reviewed and considered.
  • Can I apply more than once?
You can apply more than once while you work at Anthem, as long as you have not received a grant in the past rolling 12 months.
  • What if I was turned down before?
Yes. A previous decision does not count against a new request, and circumstances change. The 12-month limit applies to grants you have received, not to applications, so being turned down does not stop you applying again.
  • Do I need to have worked here a certain length of time?
Yes. You need to have completed at least 90 days and be an active employee in good standing. Volunteers, vendors, contractors and agency staff are not eligible.
